First Chapter
The
Glory of the Guru Giving the Knowledge of Devotion to Krsna
He (Sankaradeva) fixed service to the Guru at the
very beginning of the book.
The Guru’s counsel (upadesa) is needed in all
endeavors. [10]
Ordinary knowledge, even, is obtained through Guru’s counsel.
Devotion to Hari is not obtained without serving the Guru (guru-seva).
Therefore, at the outset, the great path of Guru’s
Service
he has laid down, know this essential truth. [11]
Listen now, of what kind is this path of service to Guru.
This is contained in the 10th book (of the
Bhagavata), in the 80th chapter.
Madhava says the following words to Vipra Damodara,
“Listen, O my friend and supreme devotee! [12]
The Guru who gives the knowledge of devotion is the object
of extreme veneration.
In order to expound on this, I mention Guru to be three in
